Sporadic wildfires occur quite often in Spain, which is due to climatic changes that fuel these fires. They are of four types that can be driven by heat, a heat wave, a seasonal drought, or wind. Heat-driven wildfires are due to the temperature and dryness of fuels due to low fuel moisture. Heat wave wildfires are caused by high temperatures and dryness in fine fuels whipped up by calm winds. Seasonal drought wildfires are due to extended drought periods that lead to dry fuels due to low moisture content in winds. Wind-driven wildfires occur suddenly on warm days with strong winds due to a sudden drop in humidity. Different strategies are needed to combat these fire situations. Fuel treatments should be promoted to diminish hazards caused by fuel moisture content fires, whereas early warning systems and fire fighting arrangements are needed where wind is driving the spread of fire. Firebreaks are common in the forests of Aragon and Valencia.
According to the report titled "Spain Fire Safety Equipment Market Overview, 2027", published by Actual Market Research (AMR), the fire safety equipment market for Spain is expected to rise with a CAGR of 4.89% over the forecast period. Fire detection remains the main product type that leads the market and fire alarm the least as these are less installed in Spain. Industrial premises are well equipped than residential or commercial premises in Spain. On the other hand, residential segment are expected to be increasing over the forecast period with a CAGR of 5.28% which would be the highest of all.
165 people died in Spain from fire in 2018. That is more than 125 people died in their homes. The highest number of casualties was from Andalusia with 37 deaths, followed by Catalonia with 25 deaths and Valencia with 17 deaths. During the cold months of October and March, more people died, and the majority were elderly people. This is due to elderly people living alone and bad heating habits, as heaters are not well maintained. The number of deaths increased from 42 in 2018 to 54 in 2019, most of which were due to intoxication due to electrical incidents. Fires caused by smoking and heat-producing appliances like radiators and braziers are also prominent. The fire occurs mainly in the living room of the house and least in the kitchen. It is therefore very important to install smoke detectors in homes, which are quite rare in residential homes in Spain. France, Germany, and Britain rank higher in terms of fire detectors installed in homes.
Various measures are being taken by the government and industry players to overcome the high number of fire deaths and fire occurrences in Spain. The Foundation MAPFRE and the Spanish Professional Firefighters’ Association (APTB) are launching the 15th edition of Fire Prevention Week, an initiative that aims to help the population identify risks and how to act in the event of a fire. Numerous other activities will be organized in collaboration with Autonomous Communities, Provincial Councils, Town Halls and different fire services in the national territory, with the aim of disseminating guidelines to make citizens aware of the risks of fires that may occur in their homes and how to avoid them. Schools are the main target of this campaign, in which the role of teachers regarding the safety of students and themselves is particularly relevant. In addition to Spain, Foundation MAPFRE carries out fire prevention activities in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay.
The recent COVID-19 outbreak has been affecting every business globally since December 2019. There was a drop in deaths due to fire during the pandemic as people were confined to their homes for most of the time. As the entire family was present at home, there was reduced recklessness, on one hand, and mistakes, on the other. The continuous rise of this pandemic resulted in the government taking steps to put bars on the transportation of humans and goods. The manufacturing industries experienced a temporary shutdown in their activities to curb the virus. The factory shut down and their border lockdowns have impacted manufacturing, supply, and sales of various industries, thus stopping the production of safety products and their adoption in buildings. However, as the situation normalizes, businesses are resuming, including construction activity. With construction projects getting underway, the market for new fire protection products will rise gradually with the ease of the supply chain.
